Bettina Schmitz is head of the Epilepsy Research Group at the Department of Neurology at the Charité, Virchow-Klinikum, Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany. She qualified in medicine from the Free University in Berlin in 1986. She qualified in neurology and psychiatry and worked as a research fellow at the Institute of Neurology in Queen Square, London, in 1991 and 1992. She completed her MD on psychosis in epilepsy in 1989, her PhD on functional imaging in behavioural disorders and epilepsy in 1997. She became Professor in Neurology in 2005.
Her research has focused on epilepsy. Her current research interests include teratogenetic effects of anticonvulsants, epilepsy genetics and neuropsychiatric aspects of epilepsy. She was head of the ILAE Commission on psychobiology of epilepsy until 2005. Currently she is a member of the German chapter of the ILAE, the Commission on European Affairs, the ILAE Commission on Education and the Michael Foundation board. She is on the editorial board of several national and international journals including Epilepsia and Epilepsy and Behaviour.
